Will rooftop solar work during a blackout? Ask about backup, not just panels

HOMI Solar Malaysia: Will rooftop solar work during a blackout? Ask about backup, not just panels (illustrative project photograph)

Do not assume installed panels mean power during a grid outage. DOE explains that solar-plus-storage needs an inverter arrangement designed for operation without grid support. Whether your proposed system can back up particular circuits must be confirmed by a qualified installer and the applicable local requirements.

Define what must keep running

List genuinely critical equipment before choosing a battery: lighting, communications, essential refrigeration or specific business loads. Distinguish ordinary appliances from medically important or safety-critical equipment that needs specialist advice. Whole-home backup and selected-circuit backup are different briefs.

Ask for demonstrated behaviour

Ask what happens when grid power fails, which circuits remain available, how long changeover takes and what happens when the battery reaches its reserve. Request a supervised commissioning demonstration rather than trying to simulate a fault yourself.

Keep safety ahead of convenience

Never bypass protection, connect a generator to an ordinary socket or modify distribution-board wiring. Treat flood exposure, damaged equipment and burning smells as professional safety matters. Keep an emergency contact and the owner’s instructions accessible.

Before you decide

  • Write the essential-load list and expected backup duration before discussing battery size.
  • Obtain a written list of supported circuits, output limits and reserve settings.
  • Confirm compatibility and approvals for the exact inverter and storage arrangement.
  • Ask for safe operating instructions, fault response and a witnessed handover demonstration.

Discuss your property with HOMI

Homi Solar Malaysia can help turn these questions into a clear property brief. Start with your location, electricity use and the decision you need to make. Keep bills, identity records and detailed customer information in an appropriate private channel, not public comments. An initial discussion is not engineering approval, an accepted quotation or a rebate decision. Ask for a dated written scope, the assumptions used, exclusions and the next responsible party. Recheck changing policy with the relevant authority before committing; do not treat a general article as a personalised design or a guaranteed outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Are panels alone a backup system?

Not automatically. Backup requires the appropriate designed and approved system arrangement.

Can every air-conditioner run on backup?

Do not assume so. Starting demand, continuous power and battery energy all matter.

Can HOMI approve life-critical backup from a chat?

No. Homi Solar Malaysia can arrange a discussion, but critical-load design needs competent assessment and suitable specialist advice.
