Do I Need to Clean Solar Panels? Will Bird Poop and Dust Eat My Electricity Bill?

Do I Need to Clean Solar Panels? Will Bird Poop and Dust Eat My Electricity Bill?

Solar Panels Need a “Face Wash” Too

“Is solar really maintenance-free?” We hear this often. The answer is: Low maintenance, NOT zero maintenance.

While Malaysia gets plenty of rain, rain alone cannot clean solar panels effectively—just like leaving your car out in a storm doesn’t make it shiny; it often leaves water spots and mud streaks when it dries.

The Invisible Thieves: Dust, Bird Poop & Leaves

Do not underestimate the layer of grime from air pollution, construction dust, or nature. They are stealing money from your electricity bill.

  1. Dust Soiling: It might look like just a thin layer of grey, but accumulated dust blocks sunlight. Studies show that heavy soiling can reduce generation efficiency by 5% to 15%. For a large system, this means losing hundreds of Ringgit annually.

  2. Bird Droppings — The Real Panel Killer: This is the most dangerous culprit. Bird poop is opaque and completely blocks sunlight on that specific spot.

    • The Hotspot Effect: When current tries to flow through the blocked area, the resistance turns energy into heat. The temperature at that spot spikes rapidly, potentially burning through the backsheet and causing permanent damage or even a fire risk.

How to Tell It’s Time for a Clean?

You don’t need to climb the roof. Just check your Monitoring APP:

  • Check the Curve: If it’s a sunny day, but the generation curve is noticeably lower than it was on a similar day last month.

  • Compare Strings: If you have two groups of panels facing the same way, and one is generating significantly less.

  • Visual Check: If you can see visible white spots (bird droppings) or thick grime accumulation on the edges from the ground.

DIY or Professional Service?

While you could spray it with a garden hose, beware of these Risks:

  • Don’t Use Tap Water: Tap water contains minerals that leave limescale deposits when dry, which are harder to remove than dust. Professionals use Deionized Water.

  • Don’t Step on Panels: Walking on panels causes invisible Micro-cracks.

  • Safety First: Wet roofs are slippery. Cleaning without a safety harness is extremely dangerous.

Homi’s Recommendation: Instead of risking your safety, leave it to the pros. Homi offers more than just cleaning; we provide a Full System Health Check (inspecting cables, connectors, and inverters). We generally recommend a professional cleaning 1-2 times a year to keep your investment running at full speed.
