Don’t Get Hypnotized by the Number “25”
Before you sign, a salesman might confidently say, “Don’t worry, our panels have a 25-year warranty!” It sounds amazing—peace of mind for a quarter of a century.
But when your roof leaks in Year 3, or the inverter fails in Year 13, you might call to claim warranty only to hear: “Sorry, that’s not covered under the 25-year warranty.”
Why? Because solar warranties are actually split into three types, and the most important one often has the shortest term.
1. Performance Warranty — The So-Called “25 Years”
This is usually what salespeople refer to.
-
What it means: The manufacturer guarantees that after 25 years, the panel’s output efficiency will be no less than 80%-85% of its original capacity.
-
The Reality: It covers “degradation,” not “physical failure.” As long as the panel is generating power within the allowed degradation curve, it’s considered fine. It does not mean you get a free replacement if the panel physically breaks or stops working completely.
2. Product Warranty — The Hardware Quality
This is the warranty that actually covers “if things break.”
-
What it means: Covers manufacturing defects, rust, glass breakage (non-accidental), etc.
-
Duration: Industry standard is typically 10 to 12 years.
-
Note: Inverters are electronic devices with shorter lifespans. Their warranty is usually 5 years (extendable to 10 years with some brands).
3. Workmanship Warranty — The Installer’s Integrity
This is the most critical yet most overlooked warranty. It is given by the Installer, not the manufacturer.
-
What it means: Covers issues related to the installation process, such as roof leaks (Bocor), loose wiring, or mounting failures.
-
Industry Reality: Many cheap installers only offer 1 year, or no written guarantee at all. If your roof leaks after a year, they will deny responsibility.
-
Homi Standard: We have absolute confidence in our craft, offering a Workmanship Warranty that far exceeds the industry standard.
Summary: Read the Contract, Ignore the Sales Pitch
When comparing quotes, don’t just look at the price. Ask these three questions:
-
How long is the Inverter warranty?
-
If my roof leaks due to installation, how many years do you cover? (Workmanship Warranty)
-
If the manufacturer goes bankrupt, what support do you offer?
Conclusion: True protection doesn’t come from a distant “25-year performance promise,” but from a local installer who is responsive and brave enough to take responsibility for their own “workmanship.”
