Solar, storms and insurance: questions to ask before installation

HOMI Solar Malaysia: Solar, storms and insurance: questions to ask before installation (illustrative project photograph)

Treat weather resilience and insurance coverage as separate discussions. The site design needs professional assessment, while only the actual policy and insurer can confirm cover. Neither a panel rating nor an installer’s reassurance proves every event will be paid.

Ask about the site, not a slogan

Discuss roof condition, local exposure, drainage and access with the responsible designer. Request the scope and limits of the assessment. A product test rating does not establish that this roof, mounting system and installation have all been assessed for the same conditions.

Put coverage questions to the insurer

Describe the proposed installation accurately and ask about notification, declared value, exclusions, excess, inspection requirements and ownership. Keep the written response with the policy. If a third party owns the system, identify whose cover applies and who handles a claim; do not assume a household policy includes it.

Prepare a safe incident record

Agree an emergency contact and a way to record observations from a safe location. After suspected damage, avoid the roof and damaged electrical equipment. Keep dates, relevant photos and correspondence privately, and follow professional instructions. A repair quotation and an insurer’s acceptance remain separate decisions.

Before you decide

  • Request a site-specific design and roof-condition discussion.
  • Obtain written clarification from the actual insurer.
  • Identify system owner, claim owner and emergency contact.
  • Use safe observations only after suspected damage.

Discuss your property with HOMI

Homi Solar Malaysia can help turn these questions into a clear property brief. Start with your location, electricity use and the decision you need to make. Keep bills, identity records and detailed customer information in an appropriate private channel, not public comments. An initial discussion is not engineering approval, an accepted quotation or a rebate decision. Ask for a dated written scope, the assumptions used, exclusions and the next responsible party. Recheck changing policy with the relevant authority before committing; do not treat a general article as a personalised design or a guaranteed outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Does a panel rating guarantee storm insurance?

No. Product ratings and the terms of an insurance policy are different matters.

Can I inspect the roof immediately after damage?

Do not climb or handle damaged equipment; contact suitable professionals.

Is this insurance advice?

No. This is a checklist for asking your insurer and installation team, not a coverage interpretation.
