Renovating or buying an EV? Include future loads in your solar brief

HOMI Solar Malaysia: Renovating or buying an EV? Include future loads in your solar brief (illustrative project photograph)

Tell the survey team about planned roof works and future electricity needs before accepting a layout. Renovation, new appliances and EV charging can change the demand pattern or access requirements. Future-ready is meaningful only when the included provisions and limits are written down.

Sequence roof work sensibly

Disclose known leaks, planned roof replacement and construction access. Ask who coordinates solar removal or reinstatement if work is needed later. A solar forecast cannot establish roof readiness. Resolve uncertain building conditions with suitable professionals before the installation programme is fixed.

Describe when future loads will run

Record the intended EV charging location and usual charging window, along with new cooling, pumps or business activity. Night charging and daytime charging create different planning questions. Do not use a guessed vehicle battery capacity as the household’s daily electricity consumption.

Define actual provisions

Ask which spare routes, equipment capabilities or allowances are included, and which require new design or approval. Obtain the assumptions and limits instead of a promise that any future battery, charger or panel can be added. Changing equipment later should still involve compatibility and authority checks.

Before you decide

  • List roof repairs and construction dependencies.
  • Describe future loads and their intended operating hours.
  • Record included provisions and excluded upgrade costs.
  • Reassess compatibility and approvals when the actual load changes.

Discuss your property with HOMI

Homi Solar Malaysia can help turn these questions into a clear property brief. Start with your location, electricity use and the decision you need to make. Keep bills, identity records and detailed customer information in an appropriate private channel, not public comments. An initial discussion is not engineering approval, an accepted quotation or a rebate decision. Ask for a dated written scope, the assumptions used, exclusions and the next responsible party. Recheck changing policy with the relevant authority before committing; do not treat a general article as a personalised design or a guaranteed outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Should roof repairs be discussed before solar?

Yes. Known defects and planned work should be raised before scheduling installation.

Does an EV automatically justify the largest system?

No. Charging timing, actual energy needs, roof and connection constraints matter.

Does future-ready mean unlimited expansion?

No. Ask for the included provisions and design limits in writing.
