Solar rebate and electricity-bill scams: verify the channel before sharing details

HOMI Solar Malaysia: Solar rebate and electricity-bill scams: verify the channel before sharing details (illustrative project photograph)

An official-looking message is not proof of an official request. Before sharing identity or bank information, verify the sender through a channel you already know. TNB’s scam guidance covers impersonation and bill-discount traps; solar rebate claims also deserve independent verification.

Separate programme and sales messages

Check whether the sender is an authority, utility, installer or unrelated intermediary. A commercial promotion does not become a government approval because it uses the same rebate name. Ask for the actual programme reference and written offer terms, and compare the destination with the known official site.

Do not authenticate through surprise links

Do not provide passwords, OTPs or remote-device access to someone promising a rebate or urgent discount. A padlock only indicates a connection to that domain, not that the business is genuine. Use an independently obtained contact route rather than a phone number supplied in the suspicious message.

Keep evidence and avoid rushed payment

Save the message and request explanation of the payer, conditions and expected process. Keep private account details out of public comments. If something appears suspicious, stop and contact the relevant official provider; do not send a test payment or upload documents merely to see what happens.

Before you decide

  • Verify the authority, company and exact destination independently.
  • Separate government eligibility from installer promotions.
  • Never share passwords, OTPs or remote-device access.
  • Use official support channels when a request is suspicious.

Discuss your property with HOMI

Homi Solar Malaysia can help turn these questions into a clear property brief. Start with your location, electricity use and the decision you need to make. Keep bills, identity records and detailed customer information in an appropriate private channel, not public comments. An initial discussion is not engineering approval, an accepted quotation or a rebate decision. Ask for a dated written scope, the assumptions used, exclusions and the next responsible party. Recheck changing policy with the relevant authority before committing; do not treat a general article as a personalised design or a guaranteed outcome.
