Adding a solar battery: AC or DC coupling?

AI concept of a tropical solar home with battery and inverter boxes; not an actual HOMI installation.

For an existing solar system, ask the installer to compare AC and DC battery coupling before deciding which inverter to keep or replace. The coupling label describes where solar and storage meet. It does not by itself confirm compatibility, backup power or savings.

Homi Solar Malaysia prepared this guide for owners planning a battery retrofit. Start with the existing inverter model, the proposed battery model and a clear statement of your goal: storing daytime energy, supporting selected loads during outages, or both. The diagrams are AI educational concepts, not real installations or electrical drawings.

Two ways to connect storage

The Australian Government’s battery guide describes AC coupling as a common retrofit arrangement. Its inverter guide distinguishes separate solar and battery inverter functions from a shared hybrid arrangement. These sources explain technology; their Australian rebate and approval rules do not apply to this Malaysian guide.

QuestionTypical AC couplingTypical DC hybrid coupling
Where do solar and storage meet?On the AC sideOn the DC side of a shared hybrid arrangement
Which conversion functions are present?Solar inverter plus battery inverter functionsShared hybrid inverter functions
What should an existing owner investigate?Whether the existing solar inverter can remainWhether the existing inverter supports the proposed battery or needs replacement
Does the name establish backup capability? No; require a separate backup designNo; require a separate backup design

The architecture rows summarize the two Australian explainers; the retrofit questions are HOMI’s review prompts. The backup row follows the US DOE inverter explainer: operation without grid support needs a suitable design. This table is not a component schedule, an approval list or an efficiency ranking. Individual products can package their electronics differently.

Ask what stays and what changes

Request a proposal with two columns: equipment retained and equipment replaced. Include the exact inverter and battery models, any gateway or control hardware, and the software or firmware versions used for compatibility review. A phrase such as “battery ready” leaves too much unspecified for a purchase decision.

Ask the team to mark the proposed arrangement on a single-line diagram and explain it in everyday language. Where does the battery connect? Which devices control charging? Who is responsible for commissioning the combined system? Request written manufacturer compatibility evidence for the offered pairing. Do not assume a matching brand name covers every model or firmware version.

Review backup as a separate job

If backup is your goal, list the circuits you want supported and ask the team to document the operating limits and changeover arrangement. Ask whether solar can recharge the battery during an outage in this exact design, what happens when the reserve is reached, and which loads remain outside the backed-up circuit list.

Use those questions to request an acceptance plan. Agree which operating modes will be demonstrated by the qualified team and which results will be recorded at handover. A normal grid-connected charging demonstration alone does not answer an outage question. Do not disconnect the grid, open switchgear or improvise a test yourself.

A practical retrofit checklist

  • Record the installed equipment model and the original system documents.
  • State whether your priority is energy shifting, selected-load backup or both.
  • Get a drawing and a retained/replaced equipment schedule.
  • Ask for the exact battery, inverter and firmware compatibility evidence.
  • Agree the commissioning record, warranty responsibilities and future support contact.

These are HOMI editorial purchasing suggestions. For a fair quote comparison, ask each bidder to use the same load list and the same required operating modes. Separate hardware, installation changes, commissioning and support scope in the written quotation. Ask who will investigate a problem involving equipment from two suppliers, before signing.

Do not select a topology from an assumed universal efficiency percentage. Request the proposed system’s documented energy boundary and operating assumptions. Our battery efficiency guide explains why measurement boundaries matter; this article focuses on the retrofit connection decision.

Malaysia scope and a human review

The ST SELCO index, checked 27 October 2026, identifies June 2026 guidance for Peninsular Malaysia, issued 24 July 2026. It is cited for jurisdiction context, not as approval for a battery product. Check Sabah and Sarawak requirements separately with the relevant authority and utility.

Solar ATAP rules, tariff treatment, approval and savings depend on the current PETRA, SEDA, ST and TNB requirements plus the actual bill, roof and usage pattern. Adding a battery is not a promise of programme eligibility, whole-home backup or a guaranteed return.

Explore Homi Solar Malaysia services or ask our team to review your battery retrofit questions. Begin with the equipment models and intended loads. Agree a private document channel before sharing bills; keep unredacted bills, account numbers, addresses and customer data out of public comments and public AI tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing solar inverter?

Ask for a design review of the exact installed model and proposed battery. AC coupling is an option to investigate, not automatic compatibility approval.

Does a hybrid inverter guarantee backup?

No. Request the exact backup design, supported circuit list and commissioning evidence.

Can solar charge the battery during a blackout?

Ask the supplier to confirm and demonstrate this mode for the exact equipment combination. The AC or DC label alone does not answer it.

Which arrangement is always cheaper?

There is no universal answer here. Compare written quotations with the same required modes, replacement scope and support responsibilities.
