Solar battery round-trip efficiency in Malaysia: compare AC, DC and standby losses

A solar battery’s round-trip efficiency tells you how much energy comes back after charging and discharging—but only within the boundary used to measure it. Before comparing two percentages, ask where the input and output were measured, which equipment losses are included, and whether the battery started and ended at comparable charge levels. A cell-level figure and an AC system figure answer different questions.
This Homi Solar Malaysia guide is for Malaysian homeowners and small-business owners reading a storage proposal. It concerns energy accounting, rather than battery capacity selection, warranty claims or a promise of lower bills. The cover and inline artwork are AI-generated concepts, not photographs of HOMI installations.
Write down the energy path before the percentage
Think of efficiency as a fraction: useful energy returned divided by energy put in, multiplied by 100. The words around that fraction matter. Did the measurement cover only the battery’s DC terminals? Did it include an AC-to-DC charger and a DC-to-AC inverter? Was the energy supplied directly from solar to the home, or stored and returned later?
The SAM battery model documentation treats battery converters, the PV inverter and ancillary losses separately. As a practical reading rule, ask the supplier to draw the two measurement points on the proposed system diagram. Do not rank an entire installation using a percentage whose boundary is unspecified.
A source-led comparison checklist
| Figure on the proposal | What it may describe | What to ask before comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Cell or DC battery efficiency | A DC-side boundary around cells or a battery assembly; exact scope depends on its specification. | Which converters and auxiliaries sit outside that boundary? Source: SAM. |
| AC-to-AC round-trip efficiency | Energy entering and returning at declared AC points, including the conversion stages within them. | Are both proposals using the same power, temperature, cycle and auxiliary treatment? Source: SAM converter model; comparison questions are editorial guidance. |
| Direct solar-to-home efficiency | An energy path that does not complete a battery charge-and-discharge cycle. | Is this a direct-conversion figure being confused with storage performance? Source: Tesla’s named US manual separates these paths. |
| Standby or auxiliary consumption | Energy used by supporting equipment in the declared operating state. | Is it already included in the quoted efficiency, measured separately, or excluded? Source: SAM Battery Losses. |
This is a comparison of definitions, not a product ranking. The Powerwall 3 US manual is used only to demonstrate how a manufacturer names different energy paths and test conditions. It does not establish Malaysian availability, approval, a HOMI dealership or performance at your premises.
Worked example: 10 kWh in, 9 kWh out
Hypothetical calculation only: suppose a separately metered battery cycle receives 10 kWh and returns 9 kWh at the same declared system boundary. The battery starts and finishes at equivalent charge levels; the measurement period covers the cycle and excludes direct solar energy sent to household loads. Round-trip efficiency is 9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 90%. The 1 kWh difference is an accounting loss within that defined example, not a measured HOMI result or a universal battery specification.
Now suppose a separate auxiliary load, outside that boundary, averages an assumed 20 W for 12 hours. It uses 20 × 12 ÷ 1,000 = 0.24 kWh. This is another hypothetical example, not a typical standby rating. Account for it once. If the measured input/output already includes that auxiliary, subtracting it again would double-count its effect. A bill comparison needs the applicable tariff, charging source, export treatment and actual usage; 90% alone cannot produce a saving or payback figure.

Do not treat a daily app ratio as a controlled efficiency test
A battery may finish the day with more stored energy than it had in the morning. It may retain a backup reserve, or receive charge across midnight. Comparing one calendar day’s charge and discharge totals can therefore mix energy retained with actual losses. A reserve is energy deliberately held back, rather than automatically energy lost.
Ask the installer to identify the app’s charge/discharge counters, time zone, initial and final state of charge, grid and solar charging contributions, and any missing records. Keep direct solar-to-home energy separate from the storage cycle. An unexplained ratio is a reason to check definitions and data, not a reason to change protection settings, bypass a meter or open electrical equipment.
Five questions to take into a storage discussion
- What exact model, document revision and AC/DC measurement points support the quoted percentage?
- What operating power, temperature, cycle window and initial/final charge levels apply?
- Which inverter, converter, cooling, controls and standby loads are included?
- How will commissioning records distinguish stored energy, direct solar use and energy still reserved?
- Can the proposal explain system suitability and expected usage separately from its efficiency figure?
Use our usable-capacity and essential-load guide for the different question of how much energy to reserve, and our battery warranty checklist for contractual limits. See Homi Solar Malaysia services when preparing a site-specific brief.
Malaysia: verify the applicable route separately
The Energy Commission’s current SELCO index, checked 21 October 2026, lists its June 2026 self-consumption guideline for Peninsular Malaysia. It is a jurisdiction reference here, not a claim that every battery project qualifies under one programme. Sabah and Sarawak require their own current authority and utility checks. Solar ATAP rules, tariff treatment, approval and savings depend on the latest PETRA, SEDA, ST and TNB requirements and the actual bill, roof and usage pattern.

Keep unredacted bills, account numbers, addresses and customer records out of public comments and public AI tools; agree an appropriate private channel with the team first.
Frequently asked questions
Does 90% efficiency mean I can use 90% of the battery capacity?
No. Round-trip efficiency compares energy returned with energy supplied across a stated boundary. Usable capacity, backup reserve and power limits are separate specifications.
Is DC-coupled storage always more efficient than AC-coupled storage?
Do not decide from the topology label alone. Compare complete energy paths, the actual equipment and operating conditions, using equivalent measurement boundaries.
Should standby use be deducted from the efficiency figure?
Only after confirming the boundary. If auxiliary consumption is already included in measured input and output, deducting it separately would count it twice.
Can I calculate efficiency from yesterday’s app totals?
Only with caution. Confirm the counters and period, comparable initial and final charge, charging sources, direct solar flows and auxiliary treatment before interpreting that ratio.
