Solar DC connector compatibility in Malaysia: why looks are not enough

No: two solar DC connectors that look alike should not be treated as an approved mating pair. Ask your installer to identify the manufacturer and exact type on both sides, then show the relevant equipment and connector documentation. A label such as “MC4 compatible”, a matching colour or a plug that appears to fit is not sufficient evidence for an owner to approve replacement work.
Homi Solar Malaysia offers this record-checking guide for Malaysian homeowners and facility managers. It is not an assembly, testing or fault-isolation procedure. All cover and inline visuals are AI concepts, not HOMI installation photographs, actual product identification or measured project evidence.
What the manufacturer sources actually say
Stäubli’s cross-mating guidance explains that connector contact designs and materials can differ despite similar external shapes, and rejects pairing its products with third-party brands. That is a named manufacturer’s position; this article does not turn it into a blanket statement about Malaysian law.
The CSI Solar module manual v3.3, July 2026, linked from its global downloads page, also instructs installers not to connect different connector brands and models. It says connectors are not circuit switches and warns of DC hazards under light. The applicable manual must still match the equipment at your site. We are not claiming that HOMI represents either manufacturer or that any illustrated product is locally certified.
Comparison table: a clue versus useful evidence
| What you have | What it establishes | What to request next |
|---|---|---|
| A similar shape or a generic compatibility claim | Insufficient to establish an approved pair. Source basis: Stäubli. | Both manufacturers and complete part identifiers. |
| Only one connector model on an invoice | Only one side has been documented. | A record covering the mating counterpart and its equipment location. |
| A certificate or manual | Its scope must be checked against the exact parts. Source basis: CSI manual and Stäubli. | The relevant model list, document revision and pairing instruction. |
| Installer confirmation linked to the installed parts | A more useful review record, rather than an image-based assumption. | Keep the written conclusion and any approved remedial scope with the handover pack. |
The last column and recordkeeping comparisons are HOMI editorial suggestions, not additional manufacturer specifications or a remote safety certificate. Missing paperwork is a reason to clarify the record; it does not by itself prove that the installed pair is defective.

Before a repair or panel replacement, ask one precise question
Instead of asking only whether a replacement panel has the same wattage, ask: “Which exact connector pair will remain at this interface, and which document supports that pairing?” Ask the team to include any transition cable or other changed interface in its answer. Do not assume a previous installation note automatically covers newly substituted parts.
For a proposed substitution, request a short written record: existing component, proposed component, matching document, reviewer and date. Keep the earlier revision so a future maintenance team can understand what changed. This is a recommended document workflow, not an instruction to replace a sound component or an assertion that every repair needs the same hardware.
Five safe items for an owner’s review folder
- The module or equipment model already listed in your handover documents.
- The maker and exact part identifiers for both sides, supplied by the installer.
- The applicable manual revision and the page supporting the proposed pairing.
- The qualified team’s inspection conclusion, with any open question clearly marked.
- The date, agreed scope and updated record after any approved replacement.
Use existing documents and installer-provided records. Do not climb onto the roof, unplug a connector to read its marking, touch it to judge temperature, or open electrical enclosures. A normal generation graph or a neat external photo cannot certify connector compatibility. If you notice smoke, a burning smell or visible damage from a safe location, keep clear and seek appropriate professional or emergency assistance; do not approach to collect a better photograph.
Keep the Malaysia scope clear
The Energy Commission SELCO index, checked 22 October 2026, lists June 2026 guidance for Peninsular Malaysia. It provides jurisdiction context here, not approval of a specific connector. Sabah and Sarawak require their own current authority and utility checks. Solar ATAP rules, tariff treatment, approval and savings depend on the latest PETRA, SEDA, ST and TNB requirements and the actual bill, roof and usage pattern.
For related owner tasks, see the solar handover document checklist and safe maintenance planning guide. Review Homi Solar Malaysia services, then contact our team to discuss the connector records. Share the equipment model and the document question first. Keep unredacted bills, account numbers, addresses and customer records out of public comments and public AI tools; agree a suitable private channel with the team.
Frequently asked questions
Does “MC4 compatible” identify the exact connector pair?
No. Ask for both exact part identifiers and the relevant manufacturer pairing documentation; a generic label alone leaves that question unanswered.
Should I unplug a connector to find its model?
No. Ask the qualified team to obtain identification and inspect under the appropriate safe work procedure. This guide is for reviewing records.
Does missing paperwork prove my system is unsafe?
No. It identifies an unresolved documentation question. Arrange a qualified review rather than diagnosing the installation from a photograph.
What should be recorded when a panel is replaced?
Ask the team to document the resulting interfaces, exact parts, supporting document revision and conclusion, then retain the updated handover record.
